Communcation Arts with Theatre Concentration:
Ohio Northern University offers a bachelor of Fine Arts in Communication
Arts with a concentration in Theatre. The program focuses on the
classic liberal arts approach to education in conjunction with an
extensive production program where students get hands-on experience
in the areas of acting, stage management and various technical support
positions. An ambitious production schedule involves ten productions
per year 2 dance concerts, 3 straight plays and 3 – 4 musicals
a year. In addition, students have the opportunity to study abroad
at Queen Margaret University in Scotland, ass well as many opportunities
to work with nationally and internationally acclaimed guest artists
who serve the program as guest directors and designers. Third and
fourth year students are encouraged to apply for directing and/or
design opportunities in the production season, as well as apply for
internships in professional theatres across the country.

One of the strengths of our program is our International Program.
Our teaching philosophy exposes our students to different cultures
either by international guest artists-in-residence, studying overseas,
or touring abroad. We have an International Playwrighting Festival
where we commission new works by international playwrights. Countries
have included Iceland, Chile, Mexico, Estonia, Portugal, Ireland,
Cuba, Australia and New Zealand. In 2006, Venezuela and Argentina
will be the countries represented. Every three years, the department
travels to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. We have also toured to
the Byre Theatre in St. Andrews Scotland, Estonia and Chile.
“Schools always say that they offer hands-on opportunities,
but mostly they’re just talking. At ONU, it’s true” -
Quote by Daryn Brown ’98 alum and New York stage manager.
