BFA degree in Musical Theatre:
Ohio Northern University is one of the few universities in the state
of Ohio that offer a BFA in Musical Theatre. Included in the program
are performance courses in voice, dance and acting as well as a full
regimen of courses in theatre and music. Yet the program is still
grounded in a liberal arts education that prepares students to be
working professionals. The program is enhanced by the integration
of nationally recognized guest artists affording students a variety
of approaches to the work and an opportunity to begin to develop
a network within the profession. An ambitious production schedule
involves ten shows per year, of which at least three are musicals.
Senior students are encouraged to attend national auditions for professional
theatrical work and graduate schools.
Upon completion of the program, the individual should possess a
discriminating and critical sense of his/her own work in the field
and an informed appreciation of the art forms in both historic and
present contexts. The degree program is intended for the individual
who plans to pursue a professional career in performance or further
graduate study and training in theatre.
Casting is based on audition and talent with class rank playing
no factor (i.e. you have the possibility to be cast as a freshman).
“ONU’s musical theatre program offers many opportunities.
Whether it’s acting, singing, dancing, Ohio Northern trains
students and opens the door for stage experience from the freshman
year. I have been very fortunate to perform in five productions during
my freshman year alone. The commitment to excellence is a staple
of this program.” Quote by Josh Fossitt ‘06
