The Dance Program

The Dance Program at Ohio Northern University is housed within the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Communication Arts. Ohio Northern is a small, private liberal arts institution set in rural Ohio. Programs offered at ONU emphasize a strong liberal arts education and provide a flexible course of study (maybe something here that could shoot you to course descriptions or the dance minor blurb listed below?) that adapts easily to individual needs and interests while maintaining professional standards. Dance classes average eight students per class with an accent on student and faculty interaction.

Guest artists, master classes and dance company performances are an essential part of the dance program. ONU has two performances per year with guest artists teaching, choreographing, and performing with dance students. Guest artists give students a diversity of dance experiences and provides an opportunity to learn about many different dance styles.

Ohio Northern University Dance Company

The ONU Dance Company performs on the mainstage of the Freed Center of the Performing Arts performing twice annually. Additional performance opportunities are available in chamber concerts and musical theatre productions.. The Dance Program is committed to bringing student and professional dancers together in class, rehearsals and performances. The dance company has traveled to Scotland to perform in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Acceptance into the ONU Dance Company and participation in the guest artist choreography projects is via audition and based on talent and technical skills as judged by the faculty or artist in residence. Auditions are open to ONU students regardless of class rank or major/concentration area of study and any member of the community age 16 and older.

Dance Minor

The Dance Minor is a “free-standing” minor open to anyone within the university regardless of their choice of major or concentration. The course requirements for a Dance Minor include 29 credit hours of technique, dance composition, dance history and dance practicum (performance) credit. A student has the choice of a ballet or modern emphasis within the Dance Minor. Elective credits may be taken in jazz, tap, social dance and folk dance. (A link here for course descriptions or will that be part of the menu?)
